A CHIEF believes there is no reason for people to live in poverty because there is an abundance of land in the country for people to earn a living and produce their own food.
Lomaiviti Provincial Council chairman Ratu Jolame Lewenavanua said he found it strange that people could say they lived in poverty.
“There is a lot of land lying idle in the country and people should not say or claim to be living in poverty,” he said.
“It just seems people are lazy to work the land and instead they look for options to earn easy money.
“For example, I can’t say that Lomaiviti people are poor because they have land to work on and earn a living.”
Ratu Jolame said in the Fijian culture, when a child was born, he or she was registered in the Vola ni Kawa Bula and automatically became a landowner.
