Women of Cikobia Island in Vanua Levu have taken lead roles in ensuring the preservation of their culture as well as the creation of opportunities for income generation.
Speaking to FBC News Cikobia Environment Adviser Penina Namata says the women of Cikobia attended a two week workshop in Labasa last week – and are committed to making a difference.
“The Project of Cikobia island has undertaken restoration effort not only to preserve the island biodiversity but to ensure there is always sufficient materials to manufacture traditional crafts.”
Namata adds over the recent years Cikobia has lost a lot of its people who have migrated to Vanua Levu and Viti Levu looking for better opportunities.
