IODP Expedition 331 on deep sea hydrothermal biosphere will be aired on prime time on 17 July 2011 by NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), Japan’s public broadcaster. NHK documented IODP’s operation aboard the drilling vessel Chikyu offshore Okinawa last year. The goal of expedition includes variations in biomass and species diversity, as well as the function and impact of such active subseafloor microbial ecosystems underneath the hydrothermal vents. The documentary program features engineering and scientist’s challenges and epic struggle to understand mystery-shrouded biosphere in our deep planet. It has been carefully planned, generated and developed with support of Japanese IODP implementing organization, Center for Deep Earth Exploration (CDEX) of JAMSTEC, for nearly one year.
The program will be available in Japanese from 21:00 to 21:49 on 17 July 2011 on NHK General and NHK World Premium channel.
It will be also be broadcast on NHK World in English later and announced on IODP.org http://www.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/
